San Blas Sailing Itineraries: 2 to 14 Days
A San Blas itinerary is built around distances that are short and anchorages that are close together. Two nights are enough for a first taste of Guna Yala, four to five nights let you reach the outer reefs without rushing, and seven to fourteen nights open the eastern islands and, if you want it, the passage on toward Cartagena. Every route below is a starting point, not a timetable: the captain reads the forecast each morning and moves the boat where the wind and the water are best.
Short itineraries of two or three days usually start with a private flight from Panama City and stay in the western island groups: Chichime with its two-palm sandbank, the shallow reefs off Cayos Limones, an afternoon swim from a bank that disappears at high tide. Guests fly in, sleep two nights aboard and are back in the city before an international departure.
Four to seven day itineraries add the parts of San Blas most people picture. Cayos Holandeses for the reef wall and the sheltered anchorage locals call the swimming pool, Coco Bandero for quiet nights, a Guna village stop where molas are sewn by hand rather than sold from a stall. Days alternate between sailing legs of one or two hours, long snorkeling stops and meals cooked aboard from the day catch.
Ten and fourteen day itineraries run east, toward Isla Pinos and the far end of Guna Yala, where visiting yachts are rare and the villages have barely been touched by tourism. The fourteen day version can finish in Cartagena via the San Bernardo and Rosario islands, an overnight crossing with the trade winds behind you.
